The Boy Who Cried Discrimination

Sometimes in life, bad things happen.  There are also assholes out there who will discriminate against you, and karma will one day serve them with a giant slice of taking it in the ass for being a total douche.  However, not every bad thing that happens is the result of discrimination.

We unfortunately live in a sue-happy society.  Anyone can sue anyone else for any reason.  But that doesn't mean that you are the victim of discrimination and can sue anyone who does anything you don't like.  Some examples:

  1. If you are incredibly loud and have parties every night, so your landlord chooses not to renew your lease - you're a bad tenant.  You're not respectful to others who live near you, and they do not appreciate it.  There is no law that stops a landlord from choosing not to rent to a bad tenant.  That doesn't mean that you should sue for discrimination because you had a conversation once with the landlord once and he mentioned that you're really tall so he's obviously not renewing your lease because he's prejudiced against tall people.  (There's no such thing.  Don't try to make it something.)
  2. You are standing in the middle of the street, screaming and waving your gun around like an idiot.  Someone calls the cops.  You are arrested for disturbing the peace because you were screaming and waving your gun around like an idiot, scaring people.  You cannot sue the police for discriminating against you because you're a gun owner.  What you can do is not do that again.
  3. You are driving 100 mph.  You are stopped for speeding.  This is because you were speeding, not because police hate all people of your race/gender/car model/hair style.  It's because you were breaking the law.  There is no right to break the law, and it's not discrimination to try to stop lawbreakers.
  4. You want to buy a house, so you put in an offer.  Someone else offers more after you did.  The sellers take that offer.  It is not discrimination to choose to do business with the person who will pay you more money.
So, basically, when you're doing shit you're not supposed to be doing, and someone calls you on it, that doesn't mean that you have a claim for discrimination.  When you want something that you don't get, it cold just be because life is not perfect and we do not always get what we want.  I wanted to marry Prince William, but you don't see me whining and trying to sue Kate for alienation of affection, do you?
